The Problem with Hustle

Nov 22, 2022

Have you heard anything lately about hustling or having a side hustle?

I’ve noticed it popping up in books, emails and articles and I have to say that I’m not in agreement with hustle-culture.

Here’s why. (I learned this paradigm-shifting-mind-blowing idea from my mentor Dr. Sue Morter.)

If it takes a huge amount of energy to “make something happen”, it’s going to take an equal amount of energy to sustain it.

In other words, if you’re working super hard to manifest something or bring it to fruition, you’re going to need to put out just as much energy on the other side to maintain it, and that’s just not feasible (in my experience).

On the other hand, if something comes into your life with ease and grace, it will be much easier to sustain because you’re already at that vibration.

Basically, if you’re over-trying, over-efforting, striving or forcing, you can expect to keep pushing that boulder uphill.

And that’s why hustling just doesn’t seem to me like all that it’s cracked up to be.

We can look to the line dance called the Hustle for further guidance. (Maybe you had the pleasure of learning it in junior high PE like me. Or maybe you actually got to wow people in the disco clubs if you’re of the Saturday Night Fever crowd. Or maybe you’ve never heard of the hustle - poor you!)

In any case, the Hustle in line dance (and song) form is very mellow. It’s not about hustling-bustling-overdoing energy at all. It’s smooooooth and oh so laid back and I think that’s a much better place to manifest from (and to live in general).

In case you don’t know the Hustle, or you just want to reacquaint yourself with some very pleasing vibes, here’s a video. Just see if it doesn't put a smile on your beautiful face.

Of course, you can’t just sit in your living room and expect all the things you want to come to you, but there are some very specific practices that will help you try less hard and still get better results.

My personal favourite daily practices include breathwork, checking in with my intentions and feeling the feelings associated with them, getting on the yoga mat, meditation, going out in nature for a walk and a handful of embodiment rituals. I also see a lot of value in the Sacred Success Sunday Review that I facilitate, which acts as a container to cultivate and honour great energy.

As long as I devote myself to the most important thing (connecting with my higher self), opportunities and miracles literally fall into my lap. (Well maybe not literally. They certainly fall into my phone and computer though. And seeing as my computer is a laptop, we could say that they do fall into my laptop, so that’s pretty close.)

How about you? Is there a lot of tension in trying to get something to happen in your life? Are you manifesting with a tight grip on the steering wheel of life? Do you tend to overdo it and then get disillusioned with your lack of results?

I’ve totally been there. The antidote is to shift your priorities into spending time every day doing what’s most important, which is spending quality time cultivating your energy and your connection to Spirit/the Universe/God/Creator/insert your personal favourite term.

Your mind won’t necessarily be on board. It could very well try to convince you that being busy, pushing through and working hard are the solutions, but if that were the case, it would have worked by now, don’t you think?

If you tend to put in a lot of effort but you’re not dazzled by your results, it could be time for a paradigm shift. Less hustle (unless it’s the dance); more ease, flow, grace and connection. Give it a whirl and see what happens.

With flowing love and easeful courage,

Christina
