How to create your best year yet

And while it’s nice to send out those wishes, I’m also going to give you some practical ideas on how you can actually have your best year ever. It doesn’t just happen by itself. We have to take action on ideas. Otherwise, we get the same old, same old and that never feels good, since we’re built for growth and expansion.
Here’s what you’ll need to create your best year yet:

Routine
I was reading an email the other day from a high achiever like me (and probably like you, too). She stated how our nervous systems thrive on routines. If life is chaotic and we don’t know what to expect, the nervous system is always on high alert. The Sympathetic Nervous System gets activated and its setpoint is fight or flight. As you probably know, that doesn’t feel so good.
Routines help activate the Parasympathetic Nervous System, which is all about rest and digest. It’s where healing happens. You probably have some routines that are built into your day; brushing your teeth and flossing, taking a shower, winding down at bedtime and other stuff like that.
On the other hand, we don’t want to be ruled by routines because then we become rigid and stagnant. Some routines are helpful and the brain also requires novelty and adventure. We want to find the happy medium.
Ritual
The thing about routines is that they might become boring because they can feel empty. It’s easy to just go through the motions with routines.
I love to upgrade my routines to rituals. Rituals are powerful. They invite in the sacred. They have meaning and help us feel connected to the Divine. Modern-day Shaman, Alberto Villodio shares that there’s a part of the brain that actually requires ritual to make sense of life.
One of my routines that I’ve upgraded to a ritual is brushing my teeth. While I’m doing the routine action, I also check in with my theme of the year. I ask myself how it showed up that day and connect with the feeling my theme evokes. By incorporating this ritual, toothbrushing time has become a meaningful part of my day (beyond fresh breath and sparkling pearly whites).
Accountability
The last ingredient for creating your best year yet is accountability.
How adept are you at keeping your word to yourself? Most people aren’t that good at it. We know what to do to make our lives better, to build those routines and rituals, but especially when we’re uplevelling, we often let ourselves down.
Why? 3 Reasons
Number 1: the thing the ego fears the most is the unknown. Although it’s pretty clear that we want to grow and expand, the ego is like, “Well, yeah but we don’t actually know what life will be like when we have those things we say we want, so let’s keep things the same instead.” And then it makes up all sorts of very convincing tricks to keep you in the familiar.
Number 2: we think we’re magically going to be this new amazing person who all of a sudden can just make big changes. Here’s the truth: If it hasn’t worked up to now, it’s not going to just start working all by itself. We all need support to change. That’s just a fact of being human.
Number 3: we don’t know what we don’t know. As annoying as it is, we probably don’t know how to uplevel without doing some research or getting someone else’s perspective. It’s incredibly helpful to get some outside support so you don’t have to hold all the energy yourself.
Accountability is a key factor is making changes so that you can reach your highest potential.

Putting those three things in place is how you’ll have your best year yet. You’re going to have to take some action and routines, rituals, and an accountability structure are great places to focus.
